The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is home to one of the most well-known Fire Protection Programs amongst active government agencies. The DOE focus on improved-risk approaches allows integrated evaluation of traditional industrial fire hazards, emerging technologies and advances in scientific knowledge in the fire protection and life safety fields. The Fire Protection Program continues to support these efforts in many ways.
Department of Energy personnel have long had a close relationship with the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE). Many are active members, participating in their respective Chapters or in the international organization. They have contributed to SFPE publications, such as Technology Reports, Fire Protection Engineering Magazine and the Journal of Fire Protection Engineering, as well as advancing research that has contributed to many reference books and guides. A number of Fellows are current or former members of the DOE or their site contractors.
