Fire Service Committee

Mission:
The SFPE Fire Service Committee is made up of a diverse group of SFPE members that all have an interest in the Committee's mission, which is to "Advance Cooperation and Communication Between the Fire Service and the Fire Protection Engineering Profession." Members include engineers working as Authorities Having Jurisdiction at the local and state level, Consulting Engineers, FPE's working for Industrial Corporations, and even Fire Officers in Volunteer Fire Departments. The Committee has actively pursued alternate means of communications, including meetings via teleconference and electronic mail communications. This has resulted in a significant increase in participation in committee activities, reducing costs for members to participate.

Current Activities:

• Developing speaker sessions for NFPA meetings
  
• Writing articles on use of FPE's in Fire Depts. and Industrial Fire Brigades 
  
• Networking with the National Fire Academy, National Volunteer Fire Council, Fire Department Insurance Companies, and the International Fire Marshal's Association.
  
• Identify FPE's currently working in the Fire Service
  
• Interface with the SFPE Performance Based Design Task Force on the fire service perspective and provide training and presentations to the fire service on PBD
  
• Develop an "Ask the Engineer" column for a major fire service periodical to allow fire service members to ask general technical questions on fire protection engineering matters.
  
• Investigate training for SFPE members on fire service operations.

In addition to their national focus, committee members are making a difference in their communities by "Thinking Global and Acting Local." A number of members teach technical fire protection topics at the county and college level, and our members have spoken on these topics at a number of recent national fire service conferences. The Committee welcomes input or suggestions from SFPE members related to our mission and tasks. Feel free to correspond with any committee member or the Chairman with your ideas.
