2007 Future City

Best Fire Protection Engineering Award

Annually the Society of Fire Protection Engineers presents the Best Fire Protection Engineering Award at the National Engineers Week Future City Competition (www.futurecity.org).  The Best Fire Protection Engineering Special Award evaluates how students implement fire protection in their model citiy of the future including structural fire resistance, detection and suppression systems, egress systems, alerting systems, and limitation of combustibles.

This year the team from Life Christian Academy in Harvest, Alabama was the winner of the Best Fire Protection Engineering Award.

SFPE Executive Director Dave Evans stands behind the winning team, (from left to right) Terry McGee (Engineer Mentor), Lydia McGee, Jordon French, Aaron Reid, And Lisa McGee (Teacher Sponsor).

The team's future city, FC UniverCity, was recognized for incorporating lessons learned from 9/11 to make their city safer from fire.  The students considered how humans behave in fire and required enhanced structural fire protection for all tall buildings in their city.  The picture below shows the table-top model of FC UniverCity and related documents about its design.

SFPE Rocky Mountain Chapter presents Fire Safety Design Award to Colorado Team

The Rocky Mt Chapter presented an award for "Fire Safety Infrastructure Design" during the Colorado Regional Future Cities Competition held last month as part of National Engineer's Week.

"On Saturday, January 27, SFPE Board of Directors member Joshua Elvove, PE, CSP, FSFPE served as a judge at the 2007 National Engineer Week Colorado Regional Future Cities Competition. 15 middle school teams representing 8 schools in Colorado participated in the annual competition. The team also finished second in the overall competition. The award was given to the team for protecting their Cell Heat and Energy System (CHES) - a fuel cell designed to power individual buildings in the future - with fire resistance rated construction, fixed fire suppression and fire detection. Congratulations to the "Reve de Grove" team and the entire Garden School for their accomplishments."
