SFPE Announces 2015 Fellows

SFPE has recognized six of its members as Fellows for 2015. SFPE Fellows represent a distinguished group of members who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Election to Fellow not only recognizes the achievements of fire protection engineers as individuals, but also their significant contribution to fire protection engineering and society globally.

Out of a total SFPE membership of almost 4,000, there are only 270 fellows. The six members recommended to Fellow by the 2015 Honors Committee and approved by the SFPE Board of Directors are listed below.

Samuel M. Beale, III, P.E.
S.M. Beale & Associates, Inc.
Tucker, Georgia
Sam has been a member of SFPE since 1959, and was elected to the Professional Member grade in 1989. He has been a dedicated leader within SFPE at both the National and chapter level, serving on the Executive Committee and Conference Committee as well as actively serving the Greater Atlanta Chapter. In the Southwest United States, Sam is widely recognized as a technical expert on fire protection systems, particularly water-based systems with specific expertise in their installation and operation. He is a graduate of Georgia Tech.

Robert M. Carasitti, P.E.
Jensen Hughes
Lancaster, Massachusetts
Robert has been an SFPE member since 1994, and is a very active member of both SFPE National and the New England Chapter. He is a leader in the fire protection engineering industry with expertise in building code and life safety consulting services, as well as design of fire alarm, automatic sprinkler, special suppression systems and smoke control criteria in various occupancies. He holds a BA in Math from Assumption College, and a BS in Civil Engineering and an MS in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Chris Jelenewicz, P.E.
SFPE
Newark, Delaware
Chris has been a member of SFPE since 2004 when he also joined SFPE’s staff. Eleven years later, Chris is SFPE’s Senior Manager, Engineering Practice, responsible for overseeing SFPE’s licensing activities and ABET accreditation activities that verify that fire protection engineering higher education programs meet the educational standards set by the profession. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a BS in Fire Protection Engineering a well as an MS in Management.

John M. Mertens, P.E.
Fyrsafe Engineering Inc.
Rolling Meadows, Illinois
John has been a member of SFPE since 1975, earning the grade of Professional Member in 1982. He has been an active contributor to SFPE, particularly with regard to educational and technical activities, serving as a seminar presenter and a contributor to several SFPE Guidelines. He earned a BS in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology and an MS in Industrial Safety from Northern Illinois University.

Paul E. Rivers, P.E.

St. Paul, Minnesota
Paul has been an SFPE member since 1976, earning the grade of Professional Member in 2005. He is active at both the chapter and National level, serving as both Chapter President of the Minnesota Chapter and member, SFPE Board of Directors. He was one of the inventors at 3M of NOVEC 1230, a gaseous fire suppression agent, and holds a patent for Flourinated Ketones in Fire Extinguishing Compositions. Paul earned a BS in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Jose L. Torero, Ph.D.
University of Queensland
Queensland, Australia
Jose has been an SFPE member since 1999 and has been instrumental in helping SFPE expand its global reach by helping create the student chapter of SFPE at University of Queensland in 2014. He delivered the Guise Medal lecture in 2008 and has participated in various other SFPE educational and research endeavors. He is internationally recognized for research advances in tunnel fire safety, structural behavior in fire, material flammability, post-fire remediation burn injuries and sensor-driven emergency response. He earned a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, and an MSc and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Berkley.

“Fellow is the highest membership grade within SFPE,” said SFPE President Michael J. Madden. “We honor their leadership and contributions to the profession, as well as their service to SFPE.”

SFPE will formally recognize the 2015 Fellows on Monday, November 8, 2015 in conjunction with the SFPE 2015 North America Conference & Expo at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
