The 2nd SFPE Europe Conference on Fire Safety Engineering will be held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, 5-6 February 2018. The SFPE conference is being hosted by SFPE Benelux with support from our SFPE European Chapters Coordination Group (ECCG).
The deadline to submit presentation abstracts is 15 July 2017.
SFPE's conferences have established a reputation globally as the premier events for keeping abreast of advancements in fire safety engineering. In 2015, SFPE hosted the first European conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, which drew over 160 participants from the
Fire safety engineering is growing rapidly in many European countries. The SFPE ECCG has been addressing the regional needs to facilitate greater networking, collaboration, and exchange among fire safety engineering professionals as well as a pursuit of technical knowledge and education. For 2018, the conference will focus on the following timely topics in Europe:
- Redevelopment and retrofit of offices and industrial buildings
- Transport and logistics of car parks, railroads, ships and tunnels
- Industrial hazards in power, oil and gas, and petrochemical
- Research and innovation advancements
Conference presentations will be on subjects relevant to fire safety engineering, with a focus on both the role of the fire safety engineer and on professional practice. Abstracts are being solicited for presentations from the view point of different stakeholders, and on subjects relating to the areas specified in more detail below. Please note that this is a conference abstract only. No papers need to be produced.
Health care facilities are patient centric, meaning all design elements of the building are driven to support a healing environment for the patient. The engineering challenges may include issues such as patient mobility, management, and staffing, human behavior and the impact of dementia and infirmity, infection risk control and property protections. The engineer also must address energy efficiency, sustainability, and maintainability, while providing practical cost-effective solutions. These challenges change from project to project depending on the owner’s program, local climate, regional codes, regulations, and energy costs.
Redevelopment and Retrofit: Offices and Industrial Buildings
The challenges of fire safety retrofitting in buildings should first provide protection of life and second protect property and third ensure the installation of fire safety devices has minimal impact on the features of the property. Fire safety systems should perform so that building occupants are ensured sufficient time for protected egress during fire or other emergency conditions, property is protected to ensure minimal loss during fire, and continuity of mission is not disrupted due to a fire. The complexity of retrofitting properties for fire safety varies with the degree of existing fire safety systems.
Transport and Logistics: Car Parks, Railroads, Ships, Tunnels
Fire protection engineers work to understand the inherent safety and security challenges within the realm of transportation facilities and logistic facilities (including warehouse, medical and other large-scale commercial properties) by helping operators of airports, rail and road vehicle facilities, and marine facilities and vessels to ensure fire and life safety systems are designed properly to reduce the threat to life, property and the environment. The application of computer-based fire models and egress models to fire alarm and fire suppression systems design, smoke control system design, and other specialized applications such as dispersion modeling of toxic or hazardous materials are used to best analyze needs to protect life and property.
Industrial Hazards: Harbor, Power, (onshore) Oil & Gas, Petrochemical
Few other industries pose more diverse fire protection demands than those of the industrial special hazards markets (refineries, power plants, fuel storage and other facilities prone to rapid and raging fires). The science of fire prevention and protection includes the goals of continuity of operations, protection of property and life safety.
Research and Innovation
Besides the above four themes, two connecting elements are introduced between the themes: a research agenda and innovation. Fire Engineering is a diverse and complex field involving the input from a number of different fields ranging from combustion science, material properties, toxicology, psychology and structural analysis – potentially a great incubator for research and innovation! We therefore highly welcome any new and thought provoking papers from any field which is relevant to the challenges facing modern building designers. This could include, but is not limited to the impact of the environment, human behavior, social trends, physiology, or changes to materials.
The participants at this conference will be professionals involved in fire safety engineering, design and review of fire safety design, regulations development and enforcement, testing, standards of development, and development of engineering design methods.
Those wishing to present should submit a one- to two-page extended abstract by 15 July 2017. The conference language is English.
The extended abstracts should identify the topic being addressed; the stakeholder’s views, the approach used, or suggested, for addressing the topic; and the results or recommendations. Figures may be included in the abstract, but are not required. All topics relevant to Healthcare; Redevelopment and Retrofit: Offices and Industrial Buildings; Transport and Logistics: Car Parks, Railroads, Ships, Tunnels; Industrial Hazards: Power, Oil & Gas, Petrochemical and Research are relevant to the conference.
