Growing Danger of Non-Certified and Counterfeit Sprinklers

Presented by Russell Fleming, P.E., Managing Director, International Fire Suppression Alliance

The increased global use of fire sprinkler systems has encouraged some to enter the marketplace with substandard fire sprinkler products, either lacking in product certification markings or with the counterfeit manufacturer and approval identification markings. While such products may appear adequate for their intended use, actual testing shows substantial inadequacies, which could lead to the loss of life and property. The IFSA sponsored the removal and testing of noncertified sprinklers from locations in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to determine the adequacy of the products for their intended protection. The IFSA has served for many years as the clearinghouse for the international manufacturer codes that assist in fire sprinkler product identification and is working to alert sprinkler system designers, installers and regulatory officials of the need to check product codes and approval markings against manufacturer and laboratory databases.
