Facade Fires - Recent Developments in Europe

Presented by: Lars Bostrom, PhD, RISE Fire Research

During the last decades have we seen several dramatic fires on facades, of which the Grenfell Tower fire in London is one with severe consequences, 72 fatalities. The investigations after the fire have shown that there are many high-rise buildings with potential dangerous facades. This is not only a UK problem, high risk facades can be found in many countries around the globe.

There are different ways to handle the risk with facades such as prescriptive regulations on the use of combustible materials, use of type approved and/or tested facade systems, and design using fire safety engineering. This presentation will focus on the regulations used in Europe and the development of harmonized test methods. Will a harmonized test method solve the problem with facade fires, or do we need other measures as well? This question will also be highlighted.
