A Message from the Editor

Welcome to our fourth issue of SFPE Europe Magazine. This issue will actually be the last one in its current format.

The magazine initiative has exceeded our expectations, with an ever-growing number of subscribers, which enables us to reach a larger number of engineers across the globe. Due to this success, we have decided to take this initiative a step further and are in the process of making the magazine into a more formal publication.

We have formalized the editorial process for SFPE Europe, with plans for an official editorial board with me at the helm as Managing Editor. This new structure will enable us to solicit a wider variety of articles and to establish a formal publication schedule.

The main change is organizational but there are also changes to the articles. In this issue you will actually notice a bit of the future format, the articles are shorter and more direct with a goal of presenting information succinctly to make them applicable to practitioners in the fire safety industry. For instance, the articles will give the “short” version of the subject with references for to provide information on further information the reference list will give guidance where to find more in-depth information. In this issue we have four articles, all very interesting and very relevant to fire engineering, but I would especially like to mention the one about travelling fires.

This subject has been a strong research topic over the past few years and is also being put into practice in quite a few recent structural fire safety design projects. There is no doubt that this topic will be a game changer when it comes to structural fire safety and will soon find its way into guidance documents and legislation. As always, a great thanks to the people who have put in a lot of time and effort to make this issue a reality.

I hope you will enjoy our fourth issue of SFPE Europe. The next issue, produced with the help of our new editorial board and structure, will come in the spring of 2017.

Yours sincerely,

Jimmy Jönsson, Managing Editor
