Facilitate the development of new degree programs and courses, and the utilization of new and existing programs and courses at the university level in fire protection engineering.
Since its inception, the SFPE Higher Education Committee has assisted numerous colleges and universities who are or where interested in starting FPE programs. This assistance included providing access to a) SFPE members for market surveys, b) to FPE professors for curriculum development, c) fire protection corporations for financial support and d) SFPE career promotional materials.
Recommendations for a Model Curriculum for a BS Degree in Fire Protection Engineering
In 2010 the SFPE Higher Education Committee published Recommendations for a Model Curriculum for a BS Degree in FPE This document is intended to provide recommendations for the development of a Model Curriculum for a BS Degree in FPE. The Task Group that developed this document had a great mix of professional diversity; both educators and practitioners where represented. The document was not intended to imply that this is the only acceptable combination of courses that should be offered for such a program but as a guidance document for a college that is interested in starting a FPE BS program. SFPE would like to acknowledge the efforts of Professors Magnusson, Drysdale, Fitzgerald, Motevalli, Mowrer, Quintiere, Williamson and Zalosh for their efforts in the development of the March, 1995 article “A Proposal for a Model Curriculum in Fire Safety Engineering.” That publication was an excellent resource for this document, and provides additional information on suggested course content.
Recommended Curriculum Content for an MS/ME in Fire Protection Engineering
In 2013, the SFPE Higher Education Committee worked with a special Task Group made up of educators from six different countries to publish “Recommended Curriculum Content for an MS/ME in Fire Protection Engineering
.” This document is intended to provide recommendations for the development of a Model Curriculum Content for a Master of Science (MS), Master of Engineering (ME) or equivalent Degree in Fire Protection Engineering (FPE). Given current interest in the development of new MS programs in FPE, as well as the desire to maintain existing programs that are state of the art, SFPE offers this document as a helpful guideline. The document is written in a broad fashion in an attempt to offer the most versatility. While there are key core topics that should be required, this document is not intended to imply that there is only one specific or narrow approach to the development of such programs. Multiple topics may be covered within an individual course or series of courses.
