Course Description:
The virtual seminar Advanced Fire Alarm System Design Course - Applying the Principals of PBD will cover the basics of design, installation, and maintenance of fire detection and occupant notification/communication systems in the context of the performance-based design process. We will identify the factors that influence design and how inputs from stakeholders and authorities having jurisdiction are used to identify design objectives and the performance criteria needed to demonstrate the suitability of a given alternative design.

Once the design objectives are reduced to explicit performance criteria we will use simple computational models to predict fire detection response. We will be using the computational methods outlined in Annex B of NFPA 72. We will then review the calculations used to model the performance of the occupant notification aspect of a fire alarm and emergency communications system. These calculations are valuable tools in the fire protection engineer’s toolbox that can easily be brought to bear on design problems that otherwise would require the use of time-consuming computer modeling.
