Passive Fire Protection - Design Application

Fire safety is achieved through a balanced design approach comprised of both active and passive systems. This presentation will review practical design applications of various passive fire protection systems commonly encountered in building construction. The goal of passive fire protection systems is to provide at least the minimum fire resistance requirements required by the building codes for safe building construction. Passive systems to be discussed in this presentation will include structural steel protection methods, fire-resistance rated assemblies, wood construction, concrete construction, and high temperature insulation materials. Examples of the use and application of these passive systems will be reviewed using information from the SFPE Handbook. Lastly the presentation will present how testing data and design listings for passive systems are incorporated into practical use and design applications.

Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss how passive fire protection systems achieve fire resistance goals required in the building codes and work in concert with active fire protection systems
2. Review practical design applications for various passive fire protection systems
3. Develop an understanding of the uses and limitations of various passive fire protection materials (sprayed fire-resistive materials, intumescent coatings, gypsum wallboard, mineral fiber insulations, etc.) and how they provide various levels of fire resistance and fire protection.
