GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, January 2, 2019 — The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has announced its 2019 Board of Directors, comprised of leaders from across the global fire protection engineering community.

As elected representatives of the Society, the Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing the administrative and financial functions of the Society and establishing programs to further the aims of the Society. A principal programmatic aim of the Board is to maintain the Society’s focus on advancing the SFPE mission: to define, develop, and advance the use of engineering best practices, expand the scientific and technical knowledge base, educate the global fire safety community, and reduce fire risk.

“In 2019 we are embarking on a journey to expand the global presence of the Society and to raise the profile of engineers who are appropriately qualified and competent to engineer fire safety designs,” says Brian Meacham, Managing Director of his own consulting firm and 2019 President of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. “Our 2019 Board is exceptionally qualified to help guide the Society’s efforts in these areas, reflecting significant expertise and experience in fire protection engineering, proven leadership and management skills, and diversity in geographic, gender and sector representation.”

Meacham is particularly excited about welcoming Jose Luis Fernández as the Society’s new European Director, noting that “Jose Luis will be a great asset to our members and chapters in the SFPE Europe region,” and that “this is a big first step in increasing our support for members located outside of the USA.” As 2019 unfolds, Meacham is “looking forward to the SFPE core competencies for the practice of Fire Protection Engineering becoming widely endorsed and adopted, underpinned by strong university programs in fire protection engineering, a comprehensive SFPE-led continuing professional education program, and the SFPE Handbook of Fire Protection Engineering, the technical resource for the profession.”
