Mr. Militello currently serves as the Director, Occupational Safety and Health on the Secretary of the Navy staff. In that role, Mr. Militello is responsible for overseeing, directing and providing advocacy for all matters related to the Department of the Navy (DoN) Occupational Safety and Health Program. As the senior Department of the Navy career occupational safety and health civilian, Mr. Militello also serves as the Department’s civilian safety Community Manager. Mr. Militello began his current assignment on the Secretary of the Navy staff in June 2015.
Mr. Militello is a career civil servant who began his career in 1995 with Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), with whom he worked from 1995 until 2003 as a fire protection engineer in regional offices in Charleston, SC, Washington, DC, and Naples, Italy. Mr. Militello also worked from 2003 until 2005 as a fire protection engineer with the General Services Administration in the National Capitol Region.
In 2005 Mr. Militello returned to NAVFAC as the Safety Program Manager and was the senior technical subject matter expert responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, administering and evaluating the performance and compliance of all aspects of a global Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) Program, which included the oversite of over 19,000 employees and over $11B in annual maintenance, construction, demolition and repair contract work.
Mr. Militello is a licensed Professional Engineer, Certified Safety Professional, OSHA Special Government Employee, and Department of the Navy Acquisition Corps Member. Mr. Militello is a Fellow with the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), serves as a director on the SFPE Board of Directors and a trustee on the Board of Certified Safety Professionals Foundation Board of Trustees. Mr. Militello is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland at College Park where he teaches a professional development seminar in their Fire Protection Engineering Department. Mr. Militello is also a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council of the American University Department of Public Affairs. Mr. Militello holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park and a Masters of Public Administration from American University.
Mr. Militello is originally from Buffalo, New York and currently resides in Washington, D.C. with his wife Josie and children Luca and Chiara. He is actively involved in advisory boards of his daughter’s grammar school and son’s high school, and spends his free time as a sports photographer for the athletic programs at Gonzaga College High School, where his son is currently a senior.
