Future City Competition

Each year during National Engineering Week, SFPE sponsors the Fire Protection Award at the Future City Competition. The program was developed for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students to help them discover and foster interests in math, science and engineering. Students work in teams under the guidance of a teacher and a volunteer engineer mentor to design and build a city of tomorrow. They create cities on computers and then build three-dimensional, tabletop models to scale.Students also write brief narratives describing their city and must present and defend their designs at the competition before a panel of engineer judges who test the depth of the teams’ knowledge.

The Fire Protection Engineering Award is given to the team that best incorporates the principles of fire protection engineering into the design of its city.

The winners and judges of the Fire Protection Award for 2018 are shown below.

Future City Competition Looking for Volunteers

Individuals and local SFPE chapters can support Future City, a competition for middle-school students to imagine, research, design and build cities of the future with a selected theme each year, such as this year’s “Age-Friendly City,” either through volunteering to be a team mentor or judge, or by sponsoring a special award at the regional level. The program challenges students to participate as a team; solve problems; manage projects; and present their ideas in written, visual and oral form. They are judged on five project deliverables: a virtual city design, 1,500-word essay, scale model, project plan and presentation to judges.

SFPE sponsors a special award for “Best Fire Protection Engineering” at the competition finals in Washington, DC, each year. Participating is an incredibly rewarding experience – and a profound opportunity to interact with students who have an interest in STEM fields and get fire protection engineering on their radar!
