SFPE offers on-demand learning programs in a web-based format. This gives you the opportunity to work at your own pace. You can work at home, at the office, or at the fire station.

 

The programs give each participant the opportunity to learn the basic principles of fire protection engineering. Learn about sprinkler design, fire alarm design, human behavior in fire, structural fire protection and performance-based design.

 

These on-demand courses were developed in part with support from the U.S. Fire Administration Grants. These are unique educational programs designed especially for the fire service, code officials, architects, fire investigators and other fire safety professionals who deal with protection of people and property from fire. Each participant who completes the entire course will receive continuing educational credits.

Code Official's Guide to Performance-Based Design

This course provides code officials and fire prevention officers with guidance on how to evaluate the adequacy of a performance-based fire protection design. It provides an introduction into the performance-based design process, and define the roles of major stakeholders that may be involved with a performance-based design. An overview of fire dynamics and the strategies used by engineers will be discussed. This course also provides examples on how performance-based design is incorporated into the design of buildings. This course consists of 202 interactive lessons/screens.

 

SFPE will award 8 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for completing the entire course. 

 

Fire Alarms Course for Fire Service/Fire Prevention Officer Training

This course provides fire service and fire prevention personnel with a basic level of understanding of fire alarm systems. The course describes the types of fire alarm systems and the basic components that make-up a code compliant fire alarm system. Basic installation instructions are described along with important factors to be considered in the design and construction process. This course consists of 180 interactive lessons/screens.

 

SFPE will award 8 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for completing the entire course. 

 

Human Behavior in Fire

This course identifies and reviews the key factors and considerations that impact the response and behavior of occupants evacuating a building during a fire. It describes how key occupant characteristics and cognitive functions affect how a person behaves during a fire. The course also describes how people interpret and respond to fire cues, factors that impact the movement of people during an evacuation, and how to estimate the time for people movement. Participants will also learn how to prepare for the evacuation of occupants with disabilities, different evacuation procedures, and some alternatives to evacuation. This course consists of 124 interactive lessons/screens.

 

SFPE will award 8 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for completing the entire course.

 

Introduction for Fire Risk Assessment

This five hour equivalent course is presented free of charge by SFPE. Development of the course was supported by a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This course was developed primarily for fire service and fire prevention officers, but may be of value to many engineers and students would like to understand fire risk assessment and presented by William E. Koffel, Jr., P.E. The full course consists of 19 lecture sessions each of which can be viewed in about 15 minutes. Each lecture is accessed by clicking on the title in the list below.

Principles of Structural Fire Protection

Provides a basic understanding of how structural elements are protected from fire. Participants will learn about fire resistance and standard tests used to determine fire resistance of structural members. Students will explore the properties of steel, masonry, concrete and timber structural elements and how elevated temperatures affect these elements. Additionally, participants will learn the principal factors used to determine fire resistance. This course consists of 142 interactive lessons/screens.

 

SFPE will award 8 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for completing the entire course. 

 

Sprinkler Course Fire Service/ Fire Prevention Officer

This course provides fire service and fire prevention personnel with a basic level of understanding of fire sprinkler systems. The course describes the types of sprinklers systems and the basic components that make-up a code compliant sprinkler system. Basic installation instructions will be described along with important factors to be considered in the design and construction process. In addition, it will discuss how to evaluate water supplies and hydraulic calculations for sprinkler systems. This course consists of 211 interactive lessons/screens.

 

SFPE will award 8 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for completing the entire course.

 

Principles of Fire Protection Engineering

The course provides a basic overview of the principles of fire protection engineering. The following topics are discussed: Combustion and Ignition Phenomenon, Fire Endurance Evaluation, Construction and Structural Features, Materials Application, Fire Protection Design Evaluation, Life Risk Analysis, Detection and Alarm Systems, Sprinkler System Developments, Design of Water Suppression Systems and Egress and Exits. This course consists of 836 interactive lessons/screens.

 

SFPE will award 8 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for completing the entire course.  

 

Each registration includes sixty (60) days of access to the course as well as supporting materials. You must complete the course and print the Professional Development Hours (PDHs) certificate within sixty days.

 

Note: At this time Continuing Education Units may not be accepted by the State of New York.
