Applications Being Accepted for Burns Grant, Proulx Scholarship

Applications for two SFPE Foundation funding opportunities are now open: the 2016 Chief Donald J. Burns Memorial Research Grant and the Dr. Guylène Proulx, OC Scholarship. The application deadline for both is December 22, 2015. Information about each, including a link to application information, is below.

 

2016 Chief Donald J. Burns Memorial Research Grant

 

Funding for this grant has been provided by Bentley Systems, Inc. Bentley Systems is a global leader in providing architects, engineers, geospatial professionals, constructors, and owner-operators with comprehensive software solutions for sustaining infrastructure. Bentley's mission is to empower its users to leverage information modeling through integrated projects for high-performing intelligent infrastructure. Funding for this grant is to support baccalaureate, masters and doctoral students in fire safety science or fire protection engineering.

The purpose of the Chief Donald J. Burns Memorial Research Grant is to utilize information modeling as a means of improving infrastructure safety and fire service preparedness. The grant is named in memory of FDNY Assistant Chief Donald Burns. Chief Burns died in the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers on September 11, 2001, while setting up his command post to direct the evacuation. He was a decorated 39-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). He was known for his in-depth knowledge of firefighting and the FDNY, and is fondly remembered as a walking encyclopedia for his broad knowledge of New York City. Fighting fires was his passion, and he inspired many of his colleagues within the department, who hailed him as an exceptional leader and brilliant tactician and strategist.

Dr. Guylène Proulx, OC Scholarship

 

Guylène Proulx was considered by all who knew her to be one of the preeminent researchers and communicators in the field of human behavior in emergencies. Her enduring legacy, as stated by her international colleagues, is the body of her research work. This scholarship honors her legacy by building on the research in her chosen profession. The scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student undertaking a research project in the field of human factors or human behavior related to fire or emergencies, or to the integration of human factors or human behavior into fire protection engineering.


Guylène Proulx was passionate about giving back to her profession. She was a member of SFPE’s Board of Directors and of the Educational and Scientific Foundation Board of Governors. She was a Past President and Board member of SFPE’s National Capital Region Chapter. She was considered by all who knew her to be one of the preeminent researchers and communicators in the field of human behavior in emergencies. Her enduring legacy, as stated by her international colleagues, is the body of her research work. This scholarship honors her legacy by building on the research in her chosen profession.
