SFPE Names Victoria Valentine New Director for Professional Qualification Activities and Industry Alliances

 

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, December 28, 2016 — The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE)TM announced the appointment of Victoria B. Valentine, P.E., as director, professional qualifications and industry alliances. In this new role, Valentine will lead SFPE’s work in the development of the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam (PE) in Fire Protection for licensure, promoting higher education activities, overseeing its Code of Ethics, and developing core competencies and credentialing for the fire protection engineering profession.

 

Valentine will also lead SFPE’s outreach and advocacy work, which includes bridging the gaps between engineering, fire service, and other industry sectors.

Valentine, who begins her new role with SFPE on January 3, 2017, most recently served as director of engineering and department head for the National Fire Sprinkler Association. Prior to that, she was director of product standards for the association and worked in that area for 14 years. She also served as technical director of the International Fire Sprinkler Association.

 

In her new position with SFPE, Valentine will work with SFPE”s Standing Committee on Professional Qualifications on issues related to the PE Exam and NCEES, higher education and ABET, ethics and professional competencies, and credentialing. The scope of work includes:

  • PE Exam Development — serving as staff liaison to the SFPE PE Exam Development Subcommittee, providing support with the development of the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Exam in Fire, and representing SFPE on NCEES EPE & POLC Committees.
  • Professional Ethics and Standard of Conduct — serving as the staff liaison to the Professional Ethics and Standard of Conduct Subcommittee and supporting SFPE’s efforts to establish and promote the profession’s Code of Ethics.
  • Higher Education — serving as staff liaison with the Higher Education Subcommittee in developing SFPE’s core curricula content documents; serving on advisory boards for college-level fire protection programs; and representing SFPE on the ABET Board of Delegates, Engineering Delegation, and Engineering Technology Delegation.
  • Professional Competency and Credentialing — overseeing development of professional core competencies, including evaluating minimum occupational competency standards and licensing and credentialing criteria for fire protection engineers in parts of the world that do not presently recognize and/or use the U.S. engineering licensure examination.
  • Outreach and Advocacy — working with SFPE’s Standing Committee on Outreach and Advocacy to advance recognition of the profession; increase public awareness of the services the profession provides; and guide SFPE and its chapters in reaching out to the public, allied professionals, and industry members, as well as to the code enforcement community to increase the stature of fire protection engineering and fire safety engineering.

Valentine is an active industry volunteer, including service as the secretary of the NFSA Manufacturers Council, secretary of NFSA’s Quality Assurance Committee, a member of the ASCE/SEI 7 Technical Committee and Seismic Subcommittee, and several NFPA Technical Committees. She has also served the last two years on SFPE’s Board of Directors, which she will be resigning from on December 31 to begin this role. She earned a bachelor of science in civil engineering and an master of science in fire protection engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
