As the leading source for continuing professional development training, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers addresses the training needs of fire protection engineers, whether it is instruction for licensure or to update professional skills. SFPE is offering two face-to-face courses at UL labs in Chicago this August. Enjoy one-on-one interaction with the instructors and have your burning questions answered.

Protecting Flammable and Combustible Liquids Course
This 2-day course will address a broad range of issues related to safe handling and storage of flammable and combustible liquids. Included in this course is a review of certain large fire losses; strategic planning for safe operations and storage; fundamental risk determinants; navigating and understanding the relevant fire codes, regulations and standards; fire testing and defining the risk, and using passive and active features for specific occupancies. Full course descriptions can be found here.

Instructor: David P. Nugent, manager of code and project services for Global Risk Consultants, has more than 36 years of experience in the industrial loss prevention and mitigation field. His professional experience includes responsibility for corporate fire protection at a multinational chemical coatings company, coordinating full-scale fire tests involving various hazardous materials, and related client consulting. He is a member of the NFPA 30 technical committee, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. He has written numerous publications related to flammable and combustible liquids and reactive chemicals. He is a graduate of Rutgers University where he majored in chemistry. He is also a recipient of the Joseph B. Finnegan Award from the SFPE, Chicago Chapter.

PDHs: Earn up to 14 professional development hours for attending the entire course and technical tour.

Introduction to Industrial Fire Protection Engineering
This two-day course, Aug. 17-18, introduces the fundamentals of industrial occupancies and processes, including the principles of fire protection engineering that affect industrial design and the process of establishing performance objectives and design criteria for industrial fire protection. Full course description can be found here.

Instructor: Kenneth W. Dungan, PE, is the co-founder and former president of Performance Design Technologies, Inc., an engineering design and consulting firm. He has been practicing fire protection engineering for more than 40 years. The majority of his experience has been related to industrial facilities, including power plants, manufacturing facilities, and chemical plants. He holds a bachelor of science from the University of Maryland, where he majored in chemical engineering and fire protection engineering. He received his master’s degree in environmental engineering from the University of Tennessee. He is a registered professional engineer in Tennessee and Pennsylvania.

Ken has been an active contributor to the fire protection profession. He is a past president and fellow of SFPE, and a recipient of the Harold E. Nelson Service Award. He also served for more than a decade on the Board of Governors of SFPE’s Educational and Scientific Foundation. He serves on several NFPA technical committees and formerly chaired the Technical Committee on Initiating Devices as part of NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code, and the Technical Committee on Electric Generating Plants.

Testimonials

"I highly recommend this course."

“As a fire code consultant specializing in hazardous materials and high piled storage, we often face challenges dealing with the storage of flammable and combustible liquids. This course was instrumental in answering many open questions that arise from a prescriptive design. Mr. Nugent is an expert of the subject matter, and it is presented in an effective learning matter. The actual fire tests then solidified the classroom learning. The networking was great as well. I highly recommend this course.”
