Bernie has spent a rewarding career in fire protection from 30 years in the volunteer fire service where he currently serves as Chief, to fire science education – serving as an adjunct faculty member of the program at Columbia Southern University. He was in the first distance learning class offered by WPI and earned his Master’s of Fire Protection Engineering from that institution in 2000. He retired from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions LLC after 27 years of service, over 20 of which were in fire protection engineering. After retiring, he took a position with AECOM to lead the Professional Solutions fire protection team and, as part of his responsibilities, manages the Fire Protection Engineering Organization at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. Bernie was awarded the Rolf H. Jenson Award in 2007 and the Hats Off award in 2004 and 2010. He was named 2014 Leader of the Year by the Savannah River Site Chapter of the National Management Association. He was named Fellow of the society in 2011. Most recently, Bernie received the Walter W. Maybee Award for Fire Protection. He was nominated for the prestigious award by the US Department of Energy Fire Safety Committee in recognition of his knowledge, experience, dedication, professionalism and lifetime achievement in the pursuit of fire safety.
