A Message from the Editor

Greetings, all,

The last issue of the year!

This year, we started out with a new editorial board and improved procedures. This has had a profound impact on how we produce the magazine. We have streamlined just about everything that could be streamlined, and I am pleasantly surprised with the result. With the lessons learned during this last year, we are now ready to start 2018, and this upcoming year should be a bit easier for all of us involved with the magazine.

In this last issue of 2017, you will find interesting articles that, as always, have direct implications for our day-to-day work as professionals in the fire safety industry. I would like to make special mention of the one about evacuation, by Daniel Nilsson at Lund University. It describes the issue of panic and looks at whether panic really does exist in fire emergencies.

Panic is a word that we hear very often when it comes to fire events, especially if victims were involved. It turns out that it is probably not appropriate to use the word panic without having given it some thought (a great deal of thought, I would say) beforehand. I recommend that you read this article. It will very likely change your perception of how and when to use the word panic.

I would also like to promote the upcoming SFPE Europe conference, less than two months away now. The conference will be held in Rotterdam and I can assure you that it will feature a lot of interesting articles and activities. I hope to see you in Rotterdam in February 2018.

If there are readers out there who feel that you have an important subject that you would like to share with our industry, do not hesitate to contact us. We can make that happen.

As always, a huge thanks to the people who have put in a lot of time and effort to make this issue a reality.

The next issue will come in March.

Finally, I would like to wish all of our readers Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Yours sincerely,

 Jimmy Jönsson, Managing Editor
