The SFPE Board of Directors established Chapter Excellence Awards in 2005 to recognize SFPE Chapters that demonstrated excellence in contributing to the needs of their members and the Society. Three levels of recognition are awarded annually -- Gold, Silver and Bronze. For 2009, the National Capital Region was awarded the Bronze. It was presented at the Chapter Senate meeting on October 18, 2009 in Scottsdale Arizona during the SFPE Annual Meeting. Claire Frechette received the award for our chapter.

October 13, 2009 SFPE speaker Dr. Jim Mehaffey (centre) is presented a certificate from Standards Council of Canada representative Begonia Lojk (left) in recognition of his service representing Canada on ISO for his service on ISO/TC92/SC 4 from 1991 to 2008. Also present is SFPE Chapter member Brian Murphy of Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada, Dr. Mehaffey was the guest speaker at the SFPE NCR Chapter 13 October Technical Session.

SFPE NCR Chapter President Sean Tracey (left) presents Chapter member Sefton Hyde-Clarke (right) with a $500 cheque for the Ken Richardson Bursary for his wife Genevieve Gavigan. The award is presented annually to an SFPE NCR Chapter member’s relative engaged in post secondary studies. The award recognizes students that have balanced their studies with community service and volunteerism. This is the first year for the award which was named in honour of Ken Richardson to recognize his lifelong dedication to advancing the profession of fire protection engineering.

- October 12, 2008 - National Capital Region Chapter wins 2008 SFPE Chapter Excellence Award
The NCR Chapter was honoured to accept a Bronze award for Chapter Excellence at the SFPE Senate meeting
on October 12, 2008 in Charlotte, NC. The award was presented by Russ Fleming, President of SFPE, and
accepted by chapter member Josee Wolfe. Josee has recently relocated to North Carolina with her spouse, and is
now working as a fire protection engineer at the Harris Nuclear Plant. This is the second Excellence Award for the
NCR Chapter, which also won a Bronze award in 2005.

- September 18, 2008 - SFPE Chapters Selected for 2008 Awards
The SFPE Board of Directors established Chapter Excellence Awards in 2005 to recognize SFPE Chapters that demonstrated excellence in contributing to the needs of their members and the Society. Three levels of recognition are awarded annually -- Gold, Silver and Bronze. For 2008, the following chapters were selected for recognition: GOLD Award, Central Savannah Rivera Area, New England and Rocky Mountain; SILVER Award, Chicago, Greater Atlanta, Hawaii, Philadelphia-Delaware and Saudi Arabia; BRONZE Award, Carolinas, China, Japan, National Capital Region and Pacific Northwest. Awards will be presented at the Chapter Senate meeting October 12, 2008 in Charlotte, NC during SFPE Annual Meeting Week.
- August 28, 2008 - FM GLOBAL releases its engineering guidelines

- July 2008 - California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Osbispo, CA, proposing to develop both a certificate and a master's degree program in fire protection engineering.

Today Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing announced changes to the Ontario Building Code which will require sprinkler systems in most new condos and apartments higher than three storeys. The changes will come into force on April 1, 2010. (more information)
