The Code Official's Guide to Performance-Based Design Review
Performance-based design is becoming more prevalent as new codes are adopted. This can create challenges for enforcement officials or other stakeholders without a strong background in performance-based design. This four-day seminar - developed in collaboration with the U.S. Fire Administration, the International Code Council and the International Fire Marshals Association - provides guidance on approaches to review performance-based designs.
This course examines the items considered when reviewing a performance-based design: the necessary skills and qualifications of design team members and the enforcement team; review process, defining objectives, performance requirements; identification of fire design scenarios; developing trial designs; evaluation of the use of engineering methods and models; identification of design method limitations; reviewing design documents; commissioning and acceptance testing; determining the acceptability of changes made in the field; inspection, periodic testing and maintenance of performance-based designs, change of use/bounding conditions; and managing changes to the design.
