Topic: Accounting for the Human Factor When Assessing Egress Performance
The presentation will address the following key questions:

Why is it important for engineers to understand human behavior in fire?

What are the key human behaviors that influence egress?

Where have these behaviors had an impact - examples of real incidents?

How can we account for these behaviors in our models - be they engineering or computer-based models?

What can we expect from these models now and in the future?
Steven Gwynne is a Senior Scientist at Hughes Associates and has worked in the area of people movement for 10 years, especially looking at human behavior in fire. His experience includes developing engineering and computational egress models, developing technical and procedural solutions, and collecting human behavioral data. He has worked on numerous high-profile research and consultancy projects over the years in a number of environments including maritime, aviation, rail and the built environment. He has a PhD in the Mathematical Modeling of Human Behavior.

HISTORY
The Rocky Mountain Chapter was formed by a few dedicated people in October, 1983, and became a internationally recognized Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers on October 22, 1984. The membership consists of people from many diverse careers in the field of fire protection. The Chapter thrives on the participation and dedication of all it's members.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Chapter meets on the first Wednesday of each month, except during the months of June, July, and August. The meetings are usually business-meeting luncheons, with one or two social events held in the evenings. At each of the meetings there is a guest speaker who will provide a focus on new and changing developments that affect fire protection.

Also the Chapter distributes relevant articles, upcoming events, job postings, and bits of information covering the latest happenings in the world of fire protection. This information is distributed by the Chapter Secretary. To add yourself to the email distribution list, or to share something with the membership, please send an email to the Chapter Secretary. Information shared with the membership should be relevant to the profession and appropriate for distribution to the membership. Any distribution via the Chapter is at the sole discretion of the Chapter Board and its Bylaws.
MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
SFPE Rocky Mountain Chapter membership is open to all persons interested in the profession of Fire Protection Engineering. Membership in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers is not require in order to be a member of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of SFPE, nor does membership in the SFPE Rocky Mountain Chapter constitute membership in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. Individuals who join as Chapter Members must also be registered international members of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, and will be permitted to vote in Chapter affairs (such as the annual Chapter officers' election). Individuals who join as Chapter Friends need not be registered international members of SFPE, and are not permitted to vote in Chapter affairs. Please specify on the form if you are joining as a Member or a Friend.
Dues for this year are again $25 per person, $15 for International SFPE members (new this year), whether you participate as a Chapter Member or Chapter Friend. Dues are due by September 1, 2008. NOTE: An individual joining the international SFPE organization for the first time may be eligible to have his or her annual dues to RMC-SFPE waived by naming RMC-SFPE as their source on the international SFPE membership application.
