A Message from the editor

All,

Welcome to this year’s first issue. I can now happily tell you that we are officially up and

running with our “new” magazine. We have a fully operational management team and a very competent editorial board. And, as you will notice, our approach to the type of articles we produce has slightly changed. All these changes have been incorporated to guarantee a regular stream of articles and a more streamlined production process. From now on, we will have four quarterly issues with a minimum of four articles in each. The magazine will also include updates and news from our European chapters and the European region.

In this issue you will find five very interesting articles, all with a direct implication on our day-to-day work as professionals within the fire safety industry. I would like to specially mention two of these articles; we have one article treating a very “hot” topic: timber construction. Timber buildings are becoming a more common sight all over the world, but the design principles and the fire science behind this type of construction material are still undergoing some important developments. Some would actually argue that we have quite a way to go before we fully understand the implications of timber construction. I am confident that readers will find this article well worth reading. The other article is the one about wind influences when designing smoke control systems based on natural ventilation. This is an area where I can truly say that most fire engineers believe more research and more knowledge is needed to be able to understand the problem well enough and, more importantly, to be able to incorporate this knowledge into the design process. The article gives a very straightforward and honest view regarding the issue of wind.

Finally, I would like to encourage our readers to consider contributing articles. If you feel you have an important subject that you would like to tell the industry about, do not hesitate to contact us so that we can make this happen.

As always, a great thanks to the people who have put in a lot of time and effort to make this issue a reality.

The next issue will come in June.

Yours sincerely,

 Jimmy Jönsson, Managing Editor
