Please join us for live instructor-led in-person seminars prior to and immediately following the Annual Conference. These SFPE seminars were developed and peer-reviewed by SFPE experts and provide in-depth professional development on selected topics.
After you register for the conference, you will receive a confirmation email with a discount code for $50.00 OFF the Understanding Human Behavior Seminar and $100.00 OFF the Sprinkler Design for Engineers Seminar that you or your colleague can use to register via our learning management system for any of the post-conference in-person seminars in Louisville. The separate registration enables SFPE to add course materials, course assessments, references, and links that the instructors want to share during the class. When you register, you will receive a confirmation email after your registration has been processed. Approximately two weeks before the conference, all seminar registrants will receive an email with onsite course details and logistics.
Post-conference Seminar registrations must be received at the SFPE by September 4, 2024 to ensure that SFPE can schedule all seminars as planned. No onsite seminar registrations will be accepted.
SFPE reserves the right to cancel a seminar up to two weeks prior to the event.
Registration includes lunch and coffee breaks. Early Bird Registration pricing ends on August 26. Payment is required at registration to reserve your seat. Each seminar is eligible for PDH credits and Certificate of Completion will be awarded upon completion on online assessment.

SFPE Ethics Series and Peer Review for Fire Protection Engineers
Sunday, October 6 (1:00-2:00 p.m.)
This seminar covers ethics for fire protection engineers, an overview of ethics, and how the practice of engineering relates to ethics. It will also explain the ethical obligations of an engineer, the SFPE Code of Ethics, and typical ethical challenges faced in the field. There will also be an exploration of the practices and principles involved in the independent evaluation of engineering work products.
All registered attendees will also receive access to the SFPE online on-demand course on this topic, and earn a separate Certificate of Attendance for the course. (1 PDH)
TO REGISTER: Register for this seminar when registering for the annual conference. The seminar will be delivered live and is based on the content from the SFPE Ethics Series on-demand courses.
Sprinkler Design for Engineers
Wednesday & Thursday, October 9-10 (9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.)
This two-day course is based on NFPA 13 and 20 standards. The course is designed to provide participants with the tools needed to design and install fire sprinkler systems in accordance with building and fire codes. The course will cover introductory aspects that are essential for engineers who are new to sprinkler system design, classification of the hazards and commodities to be protected, confirmation of the hydraulic date and preliminary hydraulic design, and preparation of design documentation. In addition, more advanced topics such as application of new technologies, protection of high-piled storage, and computer generated hydraulic calculations is also included. (15 PDHs)

Understanding Human Behavior in Fire
Wednesday, October 9 (9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.)
The prediction of human behavior during a fire emergency is one of the most challenging areas of fire protection engineering. Yet, understanding and considering human factors is essential to designing effective evacuation systems, ensuring safety during a fire and related emergency events.
The first module of this course will present the many types of characteristics that may influence occupant performance, reaction and movement process in an emergency situation. It will include a discussion on the Protective Action Decision Model (PADM) and how it serves to inform our understanding of the flow of information to occupants via cues from the fire, building or people in a fire situation and the resultant decision-making processes that influence their protective action responses during the fire incident. Discussions will also address exposure to toxicants, irritants, heat and visibility loss in a fire and the potential impacts, including additive effects, on the human body at varying degrees of exposure.
The second module will focus on modeling human behavior in fire and will include a discussion on the development and selection of occupant behavioral scenarios. The module will also discuss the many considerations that affect the choice of a particular calculation approach or model, such as project data needed, model input data needed, complexity of scenario(s), detail of output needed, and need to assess the impact of behavioral assumptions.
The third module will discuss fire situation management and will include discussions on enhancing human response to emergency notification and messaging and managing the movement of occupants during fire emergencies. (7 PDHs)
