SFPE EDUCATIONAL & SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATION

Enhancing the scientific understanding of fire and its interaction with the natural and built environment.

Grand Challenges Initiative

The SFPE Foundation seeks industry, academic, government, non-profit, and other partners to invest in a multi-year research and educational collaboration to develop a strategy for action. We are focusing on the following topics: Energy & Infrastructure, Resilience & Sustainability, Climate Change, and Digitalization, Artificial Intelligence, & Cybersecurity.

Annual Giving Campaign Kick-Off

Last year, the SFPE Foundation held its first Annual Campaign with great success – receiving donations from 46 unique individuals and raising nearly $30,000! With your help, we can exceed this in 2022. Your donation will be doubled, thanks to a matching gift pledged by UL Solutions and the William Henry Merrill Society, up to $25,000 USD.

For the last 43 years, the SFPE Foundation has been working hard to facilitate research and education that advances the scientific understanding of fire in the natural and built environments while supporting the profession of fire safety and fire protection engineering globally. In just the last two years, donor support has helped us fund:

Due to donations like yours, the SFPE Foundation is able to offer annual technical presentations to 144+ SFPE Chapters globally, as well as free Research in Fire Engineering Webinars accessible on our website (that’s six Professional Development Hours at no cost!). These donor-supported programs are increasing access to cutting-edge research and education for members of our community around the world.

It’s never been more important to expand access to fire engineering expertise. Turn on the news today, and you’ll see evidence of the growing threat of fire and related hazards in the wildland-urban interface, as well as in urban and suburban areas; how heat waves, drought conditions, and even ice storms are impacting the water supplies we depend on for fire suppression and mitigation activities; how the development of new energy technologies creates new fire protection systems design challenges; how new knowledge of human behavior in egress and emergency situations challenges our existing models; and many more areas where fire protection engineering has a role to play. With your support, we continue to fund innovate research that expands our knowledge in key areas. Below, hear from Anene Oguaka, Ph.D. student at Stellenbosch University, on how his research project relates to broader global issues.

Our field is rapidly becoming more critical to industries across many sectors, and we must have the resources to continue this work and ensure that fire engineering expertise contributes to these pressing global challenges.

Our Purpose | Mission

Enhance the scientific understanding of fire and its interaction with the natural and built environment.

Our Impact | Vision

Facilitate scientific and engineering research focused on fire risk, safety, mitigation, control and human response.

Facilitate the development of engineering methods to mitigate the adverse consequences of unwanted fires.

Provide educational and research opportunities for the next generation of fire protection engineers.

Our Value Proposition

Facilitate global collaboration to advance the technical needs of our profession.

Identify and promote research pertinent to the development, advancement, and application of scientific and engineering principles to safeguard people, property, mission, heritage, and the environment from the negative impacts of unwanted fire.

Develop long‐term funding resources to sustain progressive research in fire protection engineering.

Our Programs

Implementing the SFPE Research Roadmap – an ambitious program to support the implementation of the SFPE Research Roadmap. In 2019, the Foundation is supporting human behavior research to update anthropometric data and movement speeds.

Student Research Grants - annual grants to global fire protection engineering/fire science students conducting research on innovative fire protection engineering topics

Awards and Scholarships – annual awards in honor of Jack Bono, Arthur Guise, and Guylene Proulx to recognize unique contributions to the profession.
