Pre-Conference In-Person Seminars
Please join us for live instructor-led in-person seminars prior to the conference. These SFPE seminars were developed, and peer-reviewed by SFPE experts and provide in-depth education on selected topics.
After registering for the conference, you’ll receive a confirmation email with a discount code for $100.00 off the Principles of Fire Protection Engineering seminar and $75.00 off the Substantiating the Suitability of a Fire Model seminar in Edinburgh. You or a colleague can use this code to register via our learning management system. Separate registration allows SFPE to provide course materials, assessments, references, and links that instructors will share during the class. Approximately two weeks before the conference, all seminar registrants will receive an email with detailed onsite logistics and course information.
Early Bird Registration ends on 28 February 2025—register early to secure the discounted rate!

He is a member of many NFPA Technical Committees. He is a member of the Board of Visitors, Department of Fire Protection Engineering, University of Maryland and a Past President of the SFPE.
This one and a half day course delves into the critical process of model substantiation in the field of engineering, focusing on fire models and their evolving capabilities. Participants will gain an understanding of the key steps in model substantiation, covering problem definition, model selection, and verification and validation processes. The course emphasizes recognizing criteria for evaluating fire models, assessing factors influencing model choice, and navigating project constraints in the selection process. Participants will also become proficient in applying the Fire Model Substantiation Flow Chart and understanding the intricate relationship between initial and boundary conditions. The course addresses strategies for handling uncertainty in fire modeling and provides a high-level overview of modeling types, including their assumptions, limitations, and unique advantages and disadvantages. Notably, the course does not offer instruction on specific modeling software, methods, or tools.
