Optional Pre- and Post-Conference Seminars

SFPE will host three seminars prior to and immediately following the annual conference. These seminars each require an additional registration fee and are open to both conference attendees and those not attending. 


Introduction to Ethics for Fire Protection Engineers 

October 8 (3:30-5:00 p.m.); Instructors Carl F. Baldassarra, PE, FSFPE, and Raymond A. Grill, PE, FSFPE

This seminar covers ethics for fire protection engineers, an overview of ethics, and how the practice of engineering relates to ethics. It will also explain the ethical obligations an engineer, the SFPE Code of Ethics, typical ethical challenges faced in the field, and a discussion of case studies to help you apply what you’ve learned. All registered attendees will also receive access to the SFPE online on-demand course on this topic, and earn a separate Certificate of Attendance for the course. (1 PDH)

TO REGISTER: Register for this seminar when registering for the annual conference. Seminar will be delivered live and is based on the content from the “SFPE Introduction to Ethics for Fire Protection Engineers” on-demand course.

   

Smoke Control Essentials

October 11-12 (8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.); Instructors Jeffrey Tubbs, PE, FSFPE, and Jim Quiter, PE, FSFPE

Through case studies, interactive lectures, and small teams working through practical examples, this course provides the fundamental concepts and principles needed to design state-of-the-art systems effectively – the focus is on practical design. Topics include smoke control design strategies and analysis techniques for stairwell pressurization, elevator smoke control, zoned smoke control, and atria and large spaces systems. (15 PDHs)

Introduction to Fire Risk Assessment 

October 11-12 (8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.); Instructor Francisco Joglar, Ph.D., PE

This two-day course is an intensive introduction to the SFPE Guide to Fire Risk Assessment, 2nd Edition, which will provide participants with a high-level overview of all the topics included. Participants will spend the first day discussing the four phases of fire risk assessment, their associated steps, and the limitations of fire risk assessment. On the second day, participants will be broken into groups to work through an example fire risk assessment to further their understanding of the concepts discussed on the first day. (15 PDHs)

Dust Explosion: Hazard Recognition, Assessment, and Management  

October 11-12 (8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.); Instructor John M. Cholin, PE, FSFPE, M.E.E.

SFPE experts developed and peer-reviewed these SFPE seminars and provided in-depth professional development on selected topics. After you register for the conference, you will receive a confirmation email with a discount code for $100.00 off that you or your colleague can use to register via the SFPE learning management system for any post-conference in-person seminars in Bethesda. The separate registration enables SFPE to add course materials, course assessments, references, and links that the instructors want to share during the class. When you register, you will receive a confirmation email after your registration has been processed. Approximately two weeks before the conference, all seminar registrants will receive an email with onsite course details and logistics. 

Seminar registrations must be received at the SFPE by September 7, 2023, to ensure that SFPE can schedule all seminars as planned. No onsite seminar registrations will be accepted.  

SFPE reserves the right to cancel a seminar up to two weeks before the event.  

 

Fees 

Introduction to Ethics seminar is $35.00 for Members and $55.00 for Non-members.

Fees for all other seminars are as follows:

  • SFPE Members: $799.00 (early-bird rate) / $899.00 (regular rate)
  • SFPE Non-members*: $1,049.00 (early-bird rate) / $1,149 (regular rate)
  • SFPE Student Members: $400.00 (limited availability) 

Registration includes breakfast and lunch on both days. Early Bird Registration pricing ends on August 29, 2023. Payment is required at registration to reserve your seat. Each seminar is eligible for 15 PDH credits and a Certificate of Completion will be awarded upon completion of online assessment.
