WUI Policy Library

Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Fire Engineering Policy Library

The WUI Working Group's Policy Module identified the need for a repository of Policy and Legislation-based WUI information that government agencies could adapt to their local context. This policy library seeks to document WUI legislation, ordinances, codes, standards, or policies enacted around the globe.

In the collection of open-access policies and resources below, the SFPE Foundation chooses to focus on WUI policies based on engineering research and best practices.

Below, you can view WUI policies enacted at local, county, province, state, or federal level. Each item has information such as title, jurisdiction type, location, and key takeaways. Click on the arrow to expand the item.

You can filter items by various Keyword searches. You can apply multiple filters. To reset the filters, simply click the "All" buttons.

This is not intended to be a comprehensive or exhaustive list of all WUI fire engineering policies enacted by governmental agencies.

The SFPE Foundation plans to add new policies to the list. If you wish to add a policy to the list, please email Lisa VanBuskirk to have it added.

Tracking Western states’ diverse approaches to wildfire building codes Key takeaways:
  • A visual dashboard of the status of WUI Building Code implementation in the Western United States (California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming) was developed.
  • Code adoption at the state and local level is explained for each state, as implementation responsibility, and other applicable WUI efforts are described. Links to the adopted codes and maps for each state are also referenced.
  • It should be noted as of the date the article was published (4 May 2026), the description of California's WUI Code does not reflect the February 2025 adoption of the International Wildland-Urban Interface Code® (IWUIC®) which went into effect on January 1, 2026.
