SFPE Announces 2016 Fellows

SFPE has recognized 12 of its members as Fellows for 2016. SFPE Fellows represent a distinguished group of members who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Election to Fellow not only recognizes the achievements of fire protection engineers as individuals, but also their significant contribution to fire protection engineering and society globally. 

Out of a total SFPE membership of almost 4,200, there are only 276 fellows. The 12 members recommended to Fellow by the 2016 Honors Committee and approved by the SFPE Board of Directors are listed below. SFPE President Milosh Puchovsky, P.E., FSFPE remarked on the newly-named Fellows, “We’re thrilled to honor these 12 individuals and their commitment to the Society by recognizing them as Fellows. We thank them for their dedication and contributions, and will continue to rely upon their leadership in moving our great profession forward. Congratulations to the 2016 class of Fellows.”


Jesse J. Beitel, III


Baltimore, MD

Jesse has been a member of SFPE since 1993, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 1993. Jesse is a Senior Scientist with JENSEN HUGHES. With 42 years’ experience, he specializes in the development of new construction products or using existing construction products in new applications so as to meet the flammability requirements of various Building or Fire Codes. His expertise includes flammability requirements and tests required for construction materials. He is a recognized expert on the flammability of materials especially foam plastics used in construction and exterior walls. He has been active in ASTM, the ICC Model Codes and is a past Chairman of the NFPA Technical Committee on Fire Tests.


Timothy A. DeRuyscher, P.E.

GHD, Inc.

Rochester, NY

Tim has been a member of SFPE since 1981, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 1988. Tim has over 33 years’ experience in design, management and consulting for fire engineering, code consulting and multi-discipline design projects and is a degreed/licensed fire protection engineer in seven US states. He serves as Principal and the North American Technical Service Line Leader for Building Services Engineering – including leading Fire Engineering for the international consulting engineering company GHD. Tim was appointed in 2015 by NY Governor Andrew Cuomo to represent Professional Engineers on the NY State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code Council for adoption of codes and standards for the built environment within the state. He continues a 39 year active volunteer fire service/brigade experience to see to enhance his understanding of fire in the built environment.


Jason E. Floyd, Ph.D.


Rockville, MD

Jason has been a member of SFPE since 2002, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 2002. He is one of the lead developers of the Fire Dynamics Simulator where he has contributed to the combustion model, the droplet evaporation model, the HVAC model, and many other areas of the code. He is a contributor to SFPE efforts to develop guidance for applying computational models during performance based design. Jason has received numerous awards recognizing his expertise, including the Jack Bono Engineering Communications Award in 2005.


David W. Frable

U.S. General Services Administration

Dave has been a member of SFPE since 1993, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 1993. He currently serves as a senior fire protection engineer with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). At GSA, he is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating and providing expert engineering advice relating to the GSA’s national fire protection program. In this capacity, he was instrumental in GSA requiring a fire protection engineer be a full participant on the design team for GSA projects. He also represents GSA on several National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) technical committees, International Code Council (ICC) committees, as well as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Fire Council. He currently serves on SFPEs Standing Committee for Membership and Chapter Relations (CMC) and serves on this Committee’s Qualifications and Membership Growth Subcommittees.


Daniel T. Gottuk, Ph.D., P.E.


Baltimore, MD

Dan has been a member of SFPE since 1998, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 1998. He is Technical Director of Jensen Hughes and VP of Specialty Services for which he leads the forensic, R&D and environmental service areas. With 27 years of experience, he is a recognized expert in fire detection and fire dynamics and is well published in the technical literature. Dr. Gottuk has evaluated fire development and fire protection systems in shipboard, residential and industrial applications. His research also includes both basic and applied forensic studies to develop fundamental understanding of fire dynamics, pattern formation and damage assessment as well as to develop practical forensic tools for fire scene investigations and analyses. He is an author and editor of the SFPE Handbook of Fire Protection Engineering.



John T. Ivison, P.Eng.

British Columbia, Canada

John has been a member of SFPE since 1972, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 1975. John has been in private practice as a fire protection engineer since the 1970s. He has acted as a fire protection consultant on government of British Columbia historic sites as well as renovation and refurbishment projects in historic districts of Vancouver. His practice revolves around historic conversions in the Gastown and Yaletown districts of Vancouver. He has been responsible for the design of fire protection improvements at Historic Hat creek Ranch, Fort Steele and other pioneer centers in the BC interior.


David J. Jacoby, P.E.

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger

Tarrytown, NY

Dave has been a member of SFPE since 1998, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 2003. David has been a member of SFPE since 1998. He is active member in both SFPE National and the NY Metropolitan Chapter serving roles from President of the local chapter to an expert member of SFPE’s Fire Service/COA committee. David has been an active volunteer firefighter for over 20 years complementing his expertise in fire/life safety consulting, system design/analysis, research, litigation support and computer modeling. His experience on local and international projects spans numerous occupancy types from single family homes to deep mines.


Robert J. Keough, P.E.


Taipa, Macau

Robert has been a member of SFPE since 2005, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 2005. Robert is Vice President for Macau and the Pacific Rim at Jensen Hughes, located in Macau, China. Robert has over 30 years of fire and life safety engineering experience. He is a licensed Professional Engineer, certified by the National Society of Professional Engineers as a Senior Engineering Technologist, and recognized by NFPA as a Certified Fire Protection Specialist. He is the President of the SFPE – Macau Chapter and has provided numerous presentations at the NFPA World Safety Congress and co-authored the U.S. NIST study "Federal Building and Fire Safety Investigation of the World Trade Center Disaster, Fire Alarm Systems."


George H. McCall, P.E.

McCall & Son, Inc

Greenville, SC

George has been a member of SFPE since 1999, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 1999. George has been involved in fire protection for 90% of his adult life, starting out as a volunteer firefighter in 1973. He is currently President of McCall & Son in Greenville, SC.

He went on to earn his degree in Electrical Engineering and worked on the development of the fire code for the Southern Building Code Congress International and International Code Council.  He served with a Greenville (SC) area fire department and County Emergency Response Team, going on to retire as the Fire Marshal of the Wade Hampton FD. He has been actively involved with SFPE serving on various SFPE committees and participating in other volunteer efforts such as mentoring students, preparing exam questions for the P.E. exam, and giving more than thirty presentations.


Anthony J. Militello, P.E.

Anthony has been a member of SFPE since 1996, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 2005. Anthony is a career federal civil servant, having worked as a fire protection engineer for Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Washington, DC and Naples, Italy and General Services Administration in the National Capital Region, and currently serves as the Director for Occupational Safety and Health for the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment. His devotion to advancing the profession is evidenced through his leadership of the P.E. Exam Development Committee, for which he was awarded the Society’s Rolf A. Jensen Award, chairing the Standing Committee for Professional Qualifications, serving as Vice President of SFPE’s Chesapeake Chapter, and contributing to SFPE publications.


Maurice M. Pilette, P.E.

Mechanical Design, Ltd.

Natick, MA

Maurice has been a member of SFPE since 1972, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 1993. He is the owner of Mechanical Designs Ltd, a fire protection and life safety engineering design and consulting firm for over 35 years, located in Framingham, Ma. He is a member of multiple UL Standard technical panels and technical member on several past Fire Protection Research Foundation projects, and is a member of many organizations including SFPE, NFSA, NFPA, IMSA and ICC. Maurice has appointed to multiple state boards and task forces, and has served as Chair of the NICET Board of Governors, Chapter President of NE-SFPE, NE-AFAA & NE Fire Protection System Designers Association.


Carl D. Wren, P.E.

City of Austin Development Services Department

Austin, TX

Carl has been a member of SFPE since 1978, and was elected to Professional Member grade in 1985. Carl currently serves as the Building Official for the City of Austin, Texas and has served the City of Austin for over 28 years. Carl has served as an adjunct instructor for the National Fire Academy fire prevention program, serves on code development committees for the NFPA and previously served for five years on NFPA technical committees which helped draft the first NFPA 5000 Building Code. He is a current member and vice-chair of the ICC Code Technology Committee which evaluated numerous ICC Board assigned issues like height and area provisions, NIST World Trade Center recommendations, and ADAG provisions. A professional engineer, Carl previously held State of Texas firefighter, EMT, fire inspector, and fire service instructor certifications.
