Model Curricula

Earning a degree, let alone a degree in engineering is a significant achievement in anyone’s life. To ensure that programs in Fire Protection Engineering are meeting the high qualities and content expected in an engineering field, SFPE has developed model curricula as a resource to universities and colleges looking to create new programs, or for existing programs looking to achieve ABET accreditation. SFPE has developed these documents taking into consideration existing ABET accreditation requirements, industry influences, and best engineering practices to provide excellence in educational outcomes.

BS Degree in Fire Protection Engineering

The BS Degree in Fire Protection Engineering model curriculum is based on a four-year program with each school year divided into two semesters. It is not intended to imply that this is the only acceptable combination of courses that should be offered for such a program or provide a detailed list of individual topics to be covered within each course. Rather, this model curriculum can give you a good feel for the types of courses you will see in a fire protection engineering program.

BS Degree in Fire Protection Engineering Technology

The BS degree in Fire Protection Engineering Technology model curriculum is based on a four-year program that will prepare graduates to work in one or more of the areas of fire protection engineering technology including fire protection analysis, knowledge of codes and standards, fire science and human behavior, fire protection systems, and passive building systems and construction as they relate to fire protection. It is not intended to imply that this is the only acceptable combination of courses that should be offered for such a program or to provide a detailed list of individual topics to be covered within each course. Rather, this model curriculum can give you a good feel for the types of courses you will see in a fire protection engineering technology program.

MS/ME in Fire Protection Engineering

The MS/ME degree in Fire Protection Engineering model curriculum provides recommendations for curriculum content for a Master of Science (MS), Master of Engineering (ME), or equivalent degree in Fire Protection Engineering (FPE). Given the current interest in the development of new MS programs in FPE, as well as the desire to maintain existing programs that are state of the art, SFPE offers this document as a helpful guideline. The document is written in a manner to offer the most versatility. While there are key core topics that should be required, this document is not intended to imply that there is only one specific or narrow approach to the development of such programs. Multiple topics may be covered within an individual course or series of courses.
