Apply to Serve on the SFPE Board of Directors

SFPE needs you! This is an opportunity for SFPE members to lead the Society in promoting and supporting the practice of fire protection and fire safety engineering worldwide. SFPE is currently seeking applicants to serve in leadership positions on its Board of Directors beginning in 2020 as well as its 2020 Nominating Committee.

  • An opportunity to enhance the value and influence of SFPE globally,
  • Professional development through the exchange of ideas and perspectives with other volunteer leaders, and
  • Access to up-to-date information about the profession.

The Society is a global organization and thus a Board of Directors comprised of individuals representative of this broad and diverse scope is critical for the long-term success of our organization. The Board of Directors encourages nominations from our international members to best assure that future Boards will possess the proper perspective and experience when addressing the evolving global issues facing our practice and profession.

Board Qualifications

The Board of Directors has identified a number of desired attributes that will be part of the selection process for new Board members:

  1. SFPE membership grade status of Professional Member or Fellow.
  2. Demonstrated leadership commitment and involvement with SFPE and the Profession. Examples include service on an SFPE Committee or a Chapter Leadership position.
  3. Recognition as a leader in the fire protection community. Examples include executive positions in organizations and companies, engagement with other allied societies or organizations, and outstanding service on a fire safety technical committee.
  4. Relevant experience in organizational management. Examples include service on other Boards, and experience in strategic planning, operations, branding, fund raising, finance, global operations, and strategic alliances.
  5. SFPE values and seeks diverse leadership as defined by race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, nationality, disability, geography, professional level, etc. SFPE seeks leaders from all types and sizes of organizations.
  6. Commitment to participate in up to four face-to-face meetings, one of which will be outside of the U.S., and virtual meetings as needed throughout the year. Terms of service are for three years, and begin on January 1.
  7. Positive leadership attributes, and ability to work collaboratively and engage in appropriate debate and discussion when needed.
  8. Visionary and strategic thinking. Demonstrated ability in developing and implementing new and innovative programs within their sphere of influence. Examples include incorporating strategy, leadership, future focus, risk taking, and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Nominating Committee Qualifications

  1. SFPE membership grade status of Professional Member or Fellow.
  2. Demonstrated commitment to and involvement with the Society. Examples include Society Fellows, Past Presidents, Past Committee Chairs, and tenure on Standing Committees.
  3. Sufficient experience and skill to competently evaluate new Board candidates consistent with the qualifications established by the Board and expressed in the Standing Rules.
  4. A keen understanding of SFPE’s vision, objectives and strategic initiatives.
  5. Knowledge and awareness of SFPE members that could be recruited as nominees for the Board.
  6. Commitment to participate in up to one face-to-face meeting, and up to 3 virtual meetings per year. Terms of service are for 1 year and begin on January 1.
  7. Ability to work collaboratively and engage in appropriate debate and discussion as needed.

Individuals interested in serving on the Board of Directors beginning in January 2020 must complete and submit the Board Nomination Form with a color head shot photo to be included on the ballot, if selected as a candidate.

Those interested in serving on the 2020 Nominating Committee must complete and submit the Nominating Committee Application with a color head shot photo to be included on the ballot, if selected as a candidate.

The SFPE Constitution and Bylaws allows for three Nominating Committee Members to be chosen by the SFPE Board of Directors and three to be voted on and selected by the membership.

Board Director and Nominating Committee submissions must be sent to Nicole Boston at ntboston@sfpe.org no later than June 21, 2019. They will be sent to the 2019 Nominating Committee for review and their selections will be put on the ballot this fall.
