Design and Planning of Water Supplies for Fire Protection: The Role of Stationary Fire Pumps

Description:

The design of fire pumps for fire protection needs is one of the most interesting aspects of fire protection design and is considered essential for professional FPE practice.

The plan for this two day event is present the various water supply system challenges that may emerge as part of the design process for fire protection and water supply needs in a fire emergency.

There are many water supply options that may exist ranging from fire protection infrastructure for large sites as well as for individual including complex buildings.

For large sites simple application of the standards will not necessarily achieve an acceptable level of reliability and performance. The aim of this course is to inform the process of design and look at various options and solutions to achieve adequate performance and reliability.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of the program, the participant will be able to:
  • Understand the types of water supplies that may be available and how these can be used in combination to solve the project objectives.
  • Distinguish between fire pumps taking suction from tanks, lakes and other supplies such as municipal or private fire mains.
  • Assess the flow and pressure of municipal supplies in meeting the design criteria for the site.
  • Sizing fire pumps for the application given the system demand and required pressure or boost in pressure.
  • Assess the adequacy of individual supplies feeding fire pumps.
  • Prioritize the supplies and their sequence of operation.
  • Use of jockey pumps and service pumps in the system.
  • Understand the various devices forming part of a typical fire pump installation: for instance pressure control and arrangements of pumps in series and parallel. Identify the additional equipment and design considerations necessary for series and parallel arrangements.
  • Types of fire pump drivers: diesel and electric fire pump controllers
  • Electric supplies for fire pumps.
  • High building requirements: multiple and combination supplies
  • Challenges in special occupancies such as those for the protection of aircraft hangars.

Target Audience

Individuals with some understanding of water supplies and familiarity with applicable codes and standards.

Course Assessment

Participants will take a written exam upon completion of the course. The exam will focus on the understanding of the concepts rather than specific calculations. Candidates will need to pass with a minimum score of 70%.

CEUs 1.4 | PDHs 14 will be offered. Upon completion of a post-test attendees will be awarded a certificate of attendance.
