Call for Abstracts

Call for Abstracts
Deadline February 2, 2026

The SFPE Foundation and its co-hosting partners invite researchers, practicing professionals, and experts to submit abstracts for the 2026 WUI Fire Engineering Summit. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your innovative projects, cutting-edge research, and valuable insights in the fire protection and safety engineering field.

The abstract submission process allows the Program Committee to select presentations and posters for inclusion in the conference program. It will enable them to identify relevant and high-quality content that aligns with the objectives and highly technical focus of the conference.

Presentation abstracts should provide sufficient scope and results to determine the quality and applicability of the engineering concepts that would be presented. Presentations must be noncommercial in nature. All abstracts will be reviewed by a panel of experts and independently rated.

Deadline to Submit: February 2, 2026

Notification of Acceptance: March 9, 2026

This event is specifically focused on engineering applications in the wildland-urban interface--we are not seeking proposals that focus primarily or exclusively on wildland fire topics. Additionally, as this event is meant to highlight engineering-based approaches, we are specifically looking for presentations that involve the use of engineering methods. We welcome proposals from a wide range of engineering specialties, and we invite abstracts on a wide range of research-driven, WUI fire engineering-related technical topics, such as:

    • Individual or Parcel-Level Risk Assessment, Fire Exposure Characterization, or Guides and Standards
      • Fire Exposure Characterization (e.g., wildland vegetation, other fuels, firebrands)
      • Individual Asset Protection (e.g., standards, regulations, guidelines, testing of materials
      • Parcel Risk Assessment (e.g., hazard assessment, vulnerability assessment, risk models)
    • Community-Level Risk Assessment, Exposure Characterization, or Guides and Standards
      • Community Characteristics and Preventive Measures
      • Community Standards and Guidelines (including community shelters)
      • Community Risk Assessment (e.g., hazard assessment, vulnerability assessment, risk models) – could maybe go with the modeling section
    • Notification, Evacuation, and/or Human Behavior in WUI Fires
    • Community Stakeholder Engagement, including research focused on the intersection of WUI fire engineering with insurance, the fire service, local government, or other stakeholders
    • Digital Technologies, such as BIM, VR, AR, and AI, and their application to WUI fire engineering challenges
    • Historical and/or forensic analysis of the WUI fire problem
    • WUI fire modeling and/or WUI fire data management systems
    • WUI Education for Engineers, such as presentations that focus on developing and growing interdisciplinary expertise on WUI fire engineering topics
    • And other relevant areas

We’re partnering with Springer Nature, the publisher of Fire Technology, the leading journal in the field of fire protection engineering, to produce a special issue based on presentations made at the 2026 WUI Summit. We will also offer opportunities to have poster PDFs, slides, and/or handouts published after the event as part of a post-WUI Summit Summary of Proceedings hosted on the SFPE Foundation website.

Additionally, student and early-career respondents submitting under this Call for Abstracts are eligible to apply (as part of your abstract submission) for complimentary registration (valued at $650 USD) and travel grant support ($1,000 USD per person). Please click on the link to submit an abstract for more details regarding eligibility. This support is made possible thanks to a generous grant from the United Engineering Foundation (UEF).

All abstracts must be submitted via the online submission system before the published deadline. You will receive an automated confirmation of your successful submission. For questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with us at FoundationEvents@sfpefoundation.org

To view a PDF of the questions contained in the online submission system, click here. Note: All abstracts must be submitted via the Google Forms link below; we are providing the questions as a PDF to help applicants gather and prepare their materials prior to submission.

We look forward to receiving your abstracts and making the 2026 WUI Fire Engineering Summit a dynamic and enriching experience for all participants.
