Member Types

SFPE membership enhances every stage of your career.  Whether you are an established professional or just starting out, advancing your member grade can bring added peer recognition to your accomplishments.  There are four grades of SFPE membership: Student Member, Member, Professional Member, and Fellow.

Any member in good standing, with the exception of a Student Member, is entitled to one vote in the affairs of the Society and may hold elective office in the Society.   

Student

A Student Member shall be enrolled full-time in an engineering curriculum or an engineering technology curriculum and not have full-time employment. Proof of student status is required annually in addition to a completed student application. All applicants must supply the following information: expected graduation date, degree, and school name. To qualify as a student member, you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student (undergraduate or graduate programs) in degree programs or recognized colleges or universities.

DEGREE TYPE CREDIT HOUR REQUIREMENT
Undergraduate Students (Bachelor's Degree) 12 credit hours per semester
Graduate/Doctoral Students (Master's Degree & Ph.D.)

9 credit hours per semester

Other full-time student or not meeting the minimum requirement must submit a letter from your University registrar stating you are currently enrolled as a full- time student.

SFPE continues to supports student members upon graduation by providing a significant dues discount, for a maximum of three years following graduation (full details about Recent Graduate dues structure are available here).  

Member (MSFPE)

A Member shall be a person who supports the goals and objectives of the Society. Membership starts immediately upon completing the online member application and submission of dues payment. 

Professional (PMSFPE)

Once a Member meets the qualifications for the grade of Professional Member, the Member can apply for the Professional Member grade. 

A Professional Member is a graduate of an engineering curriculum of accepted standing and shall have completed not less than four years of practice indicative of growth in engineering competency and achievement, three of which shall have been in responsible charge.

The SFPE Qualifications Subcommittee reviews applications for upgrade on a quarterly basis. More information about the process of upgrading to professional membership is available here (member login required) to enable you access.

Fellow (FSFPE)

The fellow is the highest grade of membership in SFPE. More information about the process of becoming a Fellow is available in the Member Dashboard.
