The webinar will examine the emerging research area of volatile organic compound (VOC) contamination in water distribution systems following wildfire. It will begin by explaining the historical context of the problem, including how the topic gained attention in the past decade and the long-term recovery challenges associated with VOC contamination and damage to communities’ water distribution systems. This discussion will highlight why VOC contamination has become more prevalent in the past decade and its linkage to increasing structure losses in the wildland-urban interface (WUI). The presentation will then examine ongoing research aimed at helping communities address VOC contamination in their water systems. This section will provide an overview of current scientific efforts, highlight key knowledge gaps, and explore how researchers are working to better understand contamination pathways and develop effective mitigation strategies. Together, these efforts aim to support more resilient water infrastructure and improve community recovery following wildfire events.
